The myth of education and empowerment is the equality each individual student has in school and the empowerment of cultures that are being taught as education. In his essay, he clearly describes lowered level courses as being unfair to its students because the students apart of the lowered level courses are taught lopsidedly to the students in higher or regular classes.
Gatto is an extremist whom proposes that school is a dwelling that diminishes the responsibility of its students, which regulates students in becoming careless. Both Rose and Gatto disagree on how private and public school systems impart their students.
He explicates in Learning to Read, an excerpt from his autobiography in that many cultures are being left out of history books even though they had a big impact on society, like the African American culture. So, I disagree with the myth of education and empowerment because not every student gets the same education as others and not every culture is highly empowered in education.
The first reason why I disagree with the myth of education and empowerment is because according to I Just Wanna Be Average by Mike Rose, many students of lowered level courses are taught unfairly compared to the students of average or college prep classes.
This comparison becomes more apparent after Rose transfers out of lowered level courses into college prep classes. He mentions that his teachers from college prep classes challenged him to become a better student and individual.
Also, the teachers were prepared and ready for class every day. Unlike the teachers of lowered level courses which were careless and remiss, the teachers of college prep classes were organized and attentive for class.
As well, students get a better understanding of the subject at hand. One notion the myth of education and empowerment proposes is that you will succeed if you go to school.
What Gatto suggests is that that statement is actually false. So, basically students learn how to be more like children in school by the lack of responsibility and care teachers place on their own students. Gatto remarks that many teachers in the public school system do not challenge their students enough and because of the lack of challenge, teachers prevent their students to make intellectual decisions in their lives when maturing.
A person that would also disagree with this notion is Ken Robinson, who explains in a short animated YouTube video that even if a student can obtain a degree, the degree will not assure a career. And although it would be easier for the student to leave school and find a career other ways, Robinson still advises that staying in school is for the better.
Instead, he simply asks teaches of public school not to lower their standards, but to push their standards higher, so that their students can be challenged into becoming successful. The third reason why I disagree with the myth of education and empowerment is because according to Learning to Read by Malcolm X, not every culture is empowered like it should be.
And because of this, the myth of education and empowerment is a bust for the third time. In American History, World History, and other types of history classes we are being taught in primary school, we praise the white man and what he accomplished, leaving out so many other cultures and ethnic groups that have done good and inspiring things as well.
In conclusion, I disagree with the myth of education and empowerment because students are not being taught equally in school and also because not all cultures are being empowered as education.
Sadly, we are far from equality, even after many difficulties fighting for it. The educational system does need to work on many things to give equality to all its students and their cultures. The first step in making things better for our educational system is to realize that the system is in turmoil and that it needs to be fixed.
